According to the Department of Telecom (DoT), in some Indian cities, 5G telecom services would be rolled out in 2022. For this purpose, trials have been set up by major service providers such as Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea, and Bharti Airtel. DoT rules out, “These Metros and big cities would be the first places for the launch of 5G services in the country next year.”
In the month of September this year, in regard to the auction of spectrum, DoT asked TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) for the proposals, meant for International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT)/ 5G on various aspects such as price, band plan, block proportion, the quantum of the spectrum which would be put to auction and related aspects regarding the auction of spectrum in 526-698 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2500 MHz, 3300-3670 MHz and 24.25-28.5GHz bands for IMT/5G.
For all and sundry, functions falling under 5G are broadly classified into 3 bands, i.e. low, mid, and high-frequency spectrum. The low band has a limited speed of 100 Mbps while the mid-band spectrum is blessed with relatively higher speeds but the mid-band comes with coverage limitations and finds issues in signal penetration as well.
